Grounding + Earthing

What was the FIRST thing you did today when you woke up? I will take a HUGE guess and say most of us picked up our cell phone to turn off our alarm, check the time, or to see if any messages or emails were sent to us overnight. AND I bet we didn’t even have to get up out of bed to do this because it was RIGHT next to us all night long.

The earth is a huge ball of mildly negative charge (free electrons)… and as humans we have become little balls of positive charge (from free radicals). Many of us may think, well POSITIVE is good, right? Ehhh, not always.

Our bodies were created to work in sync with the earth. But what are MOST of us doing all day, everyday?

We stay inside at work or at home, we wear shoes outside with plastic or rubber soles, our phones are glued to us, we stare at computers for long periods of time, we scroll through social media any chance we get (even on the toilet when we should only be focusing on one thing), and we watch Netflix until late at night in our beds with our phones yet again right by our side – all of which increases free radical damage, causing inflammation and oxidative stress (which cause disease) in the body.

So, in short, free radicals damage and age the body – and when free radicals are high, antioxidants are low. And one more time, HOW does this excess of free radical damage (free electron depletion) happen?? Pollution, medications, excessive exercise, stress, insecticides/pesticides, tobacco, alcohol, electromagnetic raditation/WIFI, and poor diet. GOT IT?!

Grounding (mother earth) is one of the MOST effective antioxidants (and least expensive) we can take advantage of for neutralizing free radical stress and fighting chronic inflammation in our body. Research suggests that LACK of grounding (electron deficiency syndrome) may have a LOT to do with the rise of modern diseases.

WAIT…First of all, what exactly is grounding (or earthing)? It is the process of putting our bodies in direct contact with the earth and it’s substances – soil, water, sand, or a conductive surface in contact with earth. When our bare feet make contact with the earth, our body absorbs tons of negative electrons, which makes us feel BETTER (neutralizing)!

Grounding and the science behind it can become a bit overwhelming when we start talking about atoms, electrons, positive and negative charges, protons, neutrons, electrolytes, etc., so I am going to do my best to keep this simple.

What did our ancestors do? They were ALWAYS barefoot, making direct contact with the earth all day and even all night when they slept on the ground. WE ARE COMPLETELY THE OPPOSITE. And it’s a “mystery” as to why there is so much chronic inflammation and disease today? Hmmm. =/

SIDE NOTE: In what ways does inflammation show up? Digestive issues (gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea), fatigue, high blood sugar, skin issues (eczema, psoriasis, itching, redness), allergies, being overweight, pain/arthritis, puffy face or bags under eyes, depression/anxiety, erectile dysfunction, menstrual issues, auto-immune diagnosis, and so on…which all can add up and turn into some sort of disease if we don’t take care of the problem.

SO…Grounding calms the nervous system, brings us back to our neutral charge, and combats free radical damage and stress.

And HOW do we connect with the earth? TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES!

The best thing we can do is sit, stand, lay, walk, or run around barefoot in the grass (a little dew is great), at the beach (sand), or even on plain concrete (no sealants).

I work on the computer all day two-three days a week and at least part of the day on other days. I know that staring constantly at the computer, while also answering texts and phone calls for the business is setting my body up with a big ol’ positive charge. I am sure many of you are in the same boat.

What to do about it? If you have the luxury of working from home, work outside with your bare feet touching the ground and walk around the yard barefoot several times per day to take a break from the EMF’s (electromagnetic fields) and WIFI in order to bring that neutral charge back in to your body.

If you are in an office job, try to hit a walk around your yard in the morning with the dew on the grass before work. At lunch, do your best find a park or some place where you can walk in the grass for a bit barefoot. If you don’t want to do that, simply sit down on the grass and eat your lunch outside. After work try to do the same thing at home. OR if you have a garden, go play in it for a while with your bare hands.

In the evening, after dinner, I try my best to stay off electronic devices. Drew and I like to sit outside without any lights on – listening to the bugs or some music while we talk. Try to sit where your feet can touch the ground (or sit on the ground) AND where you can see the moon – look at the moon a few times, ladies. This will help your menstrual cycle to get in sync with the moon phases (more on this later).

Our bodies are really made to rise with the sun and sleep when it goes down. In today’s world we keep all the lights on in the house until 10 p.m. at night, we stare at social media on our phones, and watch TV until 11 p.m. and then we try to go to bed and get GOOD rest?!? It’s no wonder humans have such trouble sleeping when our body and circadian rhythm is so confused because of all the blue light flying around everywhere, telling our brain it’s still daytime.

And if I try this “grounding” thing, HOW will all of this help me? The benefits of grounding may very well benefit you in the ways of better sleep, decreasing inflammation and pain, protecting the body from EMF’s, reducing cortisol and stress hormones, healing adrenal glands, improving menstrual cycles, decreasing anxiety, normalizing blood pressure and blood flow, reducing viscosity in the blood, etc.

When I first learned of grounding, I was definitely skeptical. A few years ago – during the winter months, I was going through a really hard time, mentally (anxiety – BAD). My ND, Dr. Tanda Cook, told me to go outside and connect with the earth - I was like, really?? It was cold, but it was worth it. I played with my horses more and even walked around barefoot in the winter. I was amazed at how much this helped me. I have always loved the outdoors, but I never realized the importance of truly making a conscious effort to connect with the earth EVERY DAY until that point in my life.

So, my advice is…try it!

Start small…

GO PLAY OUTSIDE! BE A KID AGAIN! Go kayaking/canoeing and don’t wear shoes when you stop for a break on the sandbar. Play with your kids or your animals barefoot in the yard. Plant some flowers. Oh, and dim the lights at night, turn off the TV earlier, and put your phone in the other room while you sleep.
